If you wish to start an economic activity as a sole trader or perform services in the form of self-employment, you should submit an application for entry in the Central Register and Information on Economic Activity (CEIDG).
How to handle a matter
A matter can be hadled:
- at the office
- by post
What you should know and who can benefit from the service
The Central Register and Information on Economic Activity (CEIDG) is a business register with information on entrepreneurs running their own business as sole traders (self-employed) in Poland. If you wish to operate as a sole trader, you must register in CEIDG.
If you wish to submit an application for entry in CEIDG online, you need to sign it through online banking, the Trusted Profile or with a secure electronic signature.
This register includes only entries on entrepreneurs who are:
- sole traders (self-employed)
- partners in a civil law partnership composed of natural persons.
What you have to know before applying for entry in CEIDG
In order to complete the registration quickly and without problems, prepare all the necessary data before filling in the application. In the CEIDG-1 form you need to state:
- your personal details (name and surname, date and place of birth)
- PESEL (Personal Identification Number) – if you are a citizen of Poland or if you have been assigned a PESEL number
- all your citizenships
- your address of residence and the addresses related to the business activity you wish to register
- business name – it must include your name and surname and an abbreviated business name
- PKD codes – provide the PKD codes relevant for your business activity
- number of employees you plan to employ
- the date of starting your business activity
- information on being insured with the Social Insurance Institution (ZUS), the Agricultural Social Insurance Fund (KRUS) or in another country
Please note! If you do not have a PESEL number, please check the box: “I do not have a PESEL number”. If you already have your NIP (Tax Identification Number) and REGON (Business Identification Number), you may include them on the form. If you do not have them yet, the submitted form will be at the same time an application for assignment of a NIP and a REGON number. The NIP and REGON will be added automatically and you may find them using the CEIDG search engine once your company is registered.
Please note! You need to have a legal title to the real estate where you will run your business.
You do not need to register in CEIDG if you run a small income earning activity (e.g. involving small trade). In such an event the provisions on the so-called non-registered activity may apply to you. All you need to do is keep simplified sales records and pay taxes.
You do not need to register your business if:
- you are a natural person and the revenues from your activity will not exceed 50% of the minimum wage in any month
- you have not run a business before or you did, but before April 30, 2017 your company was removed from the register of entrepreneurs and since then you have not registered it again

Choose how to submit your application – you have 5 options
- Submit your application online without visiting the office
On the CEIDG website
It will be most convenient to submit the application for entry in CEIDG online. Click on the “Handle online” button which will redirect you to the CEIDG website. Create an account at the CEIDG website, fill in the CEIDG-1 form and sign it electronically through online banking, the Trusted Profile or with a secure electronic signature.
If you plan to be a VAT payer, attach a VAT-R registration/update form to your CEIDG-1 form to be submitted online. Sign your application and the VAT-R form with a qualified electronic signature or your Trusted Profile.
Remember! The VAT-R form may be submitted only if you already have your NIP number.
Please note! If you choose to submit your application for entry in CEIDG online, you may not do it through an attorney-in-fact.
Via online banking
The application may be also submitted online through the website of one of the banks. Remember, however, that online banking gives you only the possibility of registering your business. Other matters, such as registration with ZUS or VAT registration, may be handled at an office or online through PUE ZUS or the Tax Portal.
- Fill in the application online and submit it at the office
If you do not want to sign the application electronically, you may fill in the application online on the CEIDG website and then sign it in person at the office. In order to fill in the application online you do not need to register on the CEIDG website – you may do this anonymously.
After filling in the application you do not need to print it out. Just remember the code (application number) that will appear on the CEIDG website once the application is filled in. You will need to give this code at the office. At the office a clerk will find your CEIDG online application using the code. The application will be printed out for you and once you sign it, the clerk will approve it in the system. Remember that the date of starting your business activity indicated in the application may not be earlier than the date of signing the application at the office. The address and contact data of your closest city/town or commune (gmina) office may be found here.
- Register your business over the phone
You may also fill in the application for entry to CEIDG over the phone. In order to do that, call the Help Centre (801 055 088 or 22 765 67 32). A consultant will help you fill in the application. After the call, you will receive an SMS with a code (application number). You will need to give this code at the office. The clerk will print out your application for you to sign. The address and contact data of your closest city/town or commune (gmina) office may be found here.
- Submit the application in person
You may also submit the application on paper at the office, where you will be given the appropriate form. If you wish to fill it in beforehand, you may download it from the CEIDG website, print it out, sign and submit at an office. The address and contact data of your closest city/town or commune (gmina) office may be found here.
The clerk will confirm the receipt of your application and enter the data from your application in the CEIDG system on the next day at the latest.
Please note! When submitting the application at the office, do not forget to have your identity document with you.
