Examination for a sworn translator

The data and place of the examination is scheduled by the Chairman of the Examination Commission.

The Chairman of the Commission notifies the candidate for a sworn translator about time and place of the exam, not later than 21 days before the date of the exam.

 

The exam for a sworn translator consists of two parts:

1) a written translation from the Polish language into a foreign language and from a foreign language into the Polish language

2) an oral translation from the Polish language into a foreign language and from a foreign language into the Polish language

The written test is carried out in a separate room, in conditions which ensure independent work of people taking the exam. Before entering the examination room the person taking the examination is required to show a document containing a photo confirming his/her identity and proof of payment of fees.

The examination fee charged from each candidate for a sworn translator is PLN 800. It must be transferred to the bank account of the Ministry of Justice within 7 days of the delivery of the notification to the candidate for a sworn translator about the time of the exam.

During the exam, the person taking it may leave the examination room after receiving permission from a member of the Examination Commission. Before leaving the room, the person must pass over his/her examination papers to the chairman or upon his absence to another member of the examination team, who records the time of passing over and returning the exam papers.

The written part of the exam consists of the translation of 4 texts:

1) two from the Polish language into a foreign language, of which one is a judicial, administrative or legal text.

2) two from a foreign language into the Polish language, of which one is a judicial, administrative or legal text.

The written part takes 4 hours.

 

The oral part is carried out in terms scheduled by the Chairman of the Commission, not earlier than after 7 days after the end of the written exam.

Only candidates, who have successfully passed the written exam, may take the oral exam.

The oral part consists of:

1) consecutive translation (the examiner reads out or plays a text with time breaks for translation) from the Polish language into a foreign language of two texts, one of which is a judicial, administrative or legal text.

2) a vista (the candidate receives a text in written form to translate) from a foreign language into the Polish language, of which one is a judicial, administrative or legal text.

The texts for an a vista translation are handed to the candidate directly before the translation

 

A protocol is drawn from the examination

The protocol is signed by the Chairman and all of the members of the examination team, who took part in conducting the exam.

The examination for a sworn translator is considered passed if the candidate receives positive marks for both parts.
