Providing services of terrain guides and city guides

A city tourist guide shows tourists around the city, providing them with information on the city itself and its respective objects and facilities, their history and tradition, as well as the city's relationship with other parts of the country. At present, city guides can be found in cities like Kraków, Lublin, Łódź, Poznań, Szczecin, Toruń, Warszawa, and Wrocław, as well as in complexes of cities like Tri-City and Katowice together with towns of the area of the Upper Silesia: Będzin, Bytom, Chorzów, Czeladź, Dąbrowa Górnicza, Gliwice, Mikołów, Mysłowice, Piekary Śląskie, Radzionków, Ruda Śląska, Siemianowice Śląskie, Sosnowiec, Świętochłowice, Tarnowskie Góry, Tychy, Wojkowice, Zabrze.

Whereas a terrain tourist guide is appointed for respective voivodships or regions, including towns located within the area of the voivodship or region. The duties of such guide include:

  • leading participants of the event by the route specified in the itinerary;
  • taking care of the tourists' safety and providing them with assistance when needed,
  • providing information on the region's geography, history, culture and economy.

Access to the profession of a city guide and a terrain guide has become easier since 1 January 2014. From that day on, there was abolished the requirement of undergoing theoretical and practical training. Moreover, persons who wish to perform the profession referred to above do not have to take any exam. It is sufficient that they are at least 18 years of age, have secondary education and hold no criminal record due to the performance of tasks of a tourist guide or tour leader. The requirement of undertaking training and passing exams has only been retained with respect to mountain guides.
